Dijon, France
June 2018

Dijon is the capital city of the historical Burgundy region in eastern France, one of the country’s principal wine-making areas. It’s known for its traditional mustard, vineyard tours, autumn gastronomic fair and building styles ranging from Gothic to art deco. The distinguished 1787 Musée des Beaux-Arts, housed in the vast Palace of the Dukes, holds a rich collection of paintings, sculptures, crafts and antiquities.

For many years Neil has played bridge with a local from here, Anne Vocanson. Ann spends summers in Australia and summers in Dijon. Naturally he caught up with her and she took him for a tour of the region including the Close de la Perrirer, a winery where her daughter had worked on leaving school. He also had dinner had her house one night and walked the city with her and her partner George..Wendy continued to recuperate, although she did get a haircut and had lunch with Neil watching the World Cup Soccer in the Place Emile Zola, a few doors up from our flat.

Dijon has a great walking trail around the central icons of the city, The streets have thes little oel insignias set into the footpath and you just follow the owls. What could go wrong ??, somewhere on the extension section is the top right hand corner I lost the owls. I continues in an arc around the city and believed I came to the roundabout at the bottom of the map. However some hours later I was miles away from anywhere deep in suburbia. Not a problem if you speak French. I eventually found a bus route and managed to get someone to understand where I wanted to go so they put me on a bus in the right direction. Many sections later I was back in the city centre and able to find my way home. Shame I had not taken the Garmin with me, would have made for a good laugh.
