| Today I head for Lyndells via Montpellier. AFter an hour or so I came to Caylar and pulled off the motorway to find some breakfast. Driving into town the road was adorned with painted bicycles and reaching the town centre there was a sculptured tree in the town square.
Towering over the town square was the Roc Castel, a large rocky hill studded with ancient ruins which constitute the remains of the Castellas (castle) originally built in the 12th century.
The first traces of occupation of the site date back to the Iron Age. Carolingian houses (before the 10th century) can still be seen in the village.
Behind the main square was a maze of little lanes merging into the ruins of the old castle.

From here it is a 70km drive down from the Massif Centrale to the coastal plain. Slideshow of Highway.
I had intnded to visit some friends that own a bar in Montpellier however the traffic around town was horrific and I conceded defeat and headed straight for Lyndells. From Montpellier to Sardan you have to go through Sommiere our favourite city in the south of France. I spent a few hours wandering around this city with its Roman bridge, a medieval centre, a fortified gate and the ruins of a castle. It was interesting seeing it not on a market day.Slideshow click here.
