Muhlheim to Sigmaringen

8th May 2016

Up early to check out the town. Out thru a small gate in the castle wall and down a steep track to the misty valley floor. The castle is situated at the end of a narrow spur jutting into the valley. I walked around the spur and came up the only road from the valley floor to the castle. Wandering around the houses i noticed a strange chalk symbol on many of the front doors. Apparently this is a catholic tradition which calls upon Christ to bless this house. Epiphany (also known as Twelfth Night, Theophany, or Three Kings Day) marks the occasion of a time-honored Christian tradition of “chalking the doors.” The formula for the ritual — adapted for 2020 — is simple: take chalk of any color and write the following above the entrance of your home: 20 + C + M + B + 20. ,( and they call ancient worshippers Pagans.)
