Ingolstadt to Kellheim

14th May 2016

A gentle roll along the river for the first 45 kms down to Weltenberg Abbey. Our first sighting of a ferry that is anchored to a fixed wire across the river and uses the rivers current and a large sweep oar to propel
it across the river.  Slideshow here

Weltenberg. Already by around 45 AD the area of Weltenburg was the starting point of the  Roman military and border road which followed the south bank of the Danube upstream. According to tradition, the abbey was founded in 617.  It is believed to be the oldest monastery in Bavaria. Weltenburg Abbey brewery is by some reckonings the oldest monastic brewery in the world, having been in operation since 1050. Slideshow here.

At Weltenberg the river enters the Danube Gorge as it passes through an area known as the Weltenburg narrows.Slideshow here. The gorge is enclosed on either side by rock faces up to 80 metres high, pierced by numerous small caves.

We took a boat from Weltenberg to Kellheim and then rode the last ten kms to our campsite in Herrnsal. Slideshow here.
