Today we head east and then south following the Ouche river and the canal that parallels it.
At the southernmost point the Ouche is joined by the Vandenessee and we follow it up to Pouilly.
Halfway up we see our first Chateaux. Chateau Neuf, which was to be the first and the last chteaux that I saw on this trip. Six weekds later as I was driving from Nimes back to Paris I was amazed to see, and recognise, it just off the motorway.
At Pouilly we were camped right by the entrance to the Canal de Bougogne. The Canal de Bourgogne connects the river Yonne at Laroche-Migennes with the river SaƓne at Saint-Jean-de-Losne, a distance of 242km. It provides the most spectacular and heavily-locked route between the Seine and the Mediterranean, rising to a summit level at an altitude of 378m, the highest in France.
This includes a tunnel at Pouilly-en-Auxois, 3337m in length, extended by one-way cuttings on either side.
