Tonnerre to Auxerre, France
26th June 2018

A beautiful sunny morning in Tonnerre and today we head up into the hills. They weren't big hills but they were a refreshing change to days of canals. If they were not covered in grapevines they were covered in wind turbines.

We went via Chablis. Chablis. The grape variety that produces arguably the greatest of dry white wines, Chardonnay is the basis upon which the white wines of Chablis & Burgundy, France are produced. We mangaed to find a boulangerie amd had morning tea leaning on the Église Saint-Martin de Chablis

During the Middle Ages the Catholic Church, particularly Cistercian monks, became a major influence in establishing the economic and commercial interest of viticulture for the region Pontigny Abbey was founded in 1114, and the monks planted vines along the Serein. Anséric de Montréal gave a vineyard at Chablis to the Abbey in 1186.

In 1116, the church of Chablis was confirmed in its attachment to the abbey of Saint-Michel de Tonnerre by Godefroy, bishop of Langres.

The rest as they say is history.
